Meta (META.O), Facebook’s parent corporation, has launched an appeal in Kenya, disputing a verdict that said the business may be sued in the East African country despite having no official presence there.
After a former content moderator filed a case alleging bad working conditions, a Kenyan labor court determined earlier this month that Meta could be sued in the country.
The US corporation disputed the court’s determination that Kenyan courts had jurisdiction over Meta in the appeal, which Reuters obtained on Tuesday.
Sama, a U.S.-based corporation with operations in Kenya, handled Meta’s content filtering. Sama said this month that it will no longer provide Meta content moderation services.
Former content moderator Daniel Motaung filed the case on behalf of a group of former Sama employees.
It demands monetary compensation, an order requiring that outsourced moderators receive the same healthcare and pay range as Meta workers, protection of unionization rights, and an impartial human rights evaluation of the office.
