Muslim clerics have described Eid-al-Maulud, also known as Mawlid-un-Nabiyy, as a pivotal observance in the Islamic calendar, commemorating the birth of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
The day is marked annually on the 12 of Rabi’ al-awwal in the Islamic calendar.
Prof. Ibrahim Maqari, a renowned Muslim cleric, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Monday that the event presented an opportunity for Muslims to reflect on the Prophet’s life, teachings, and role in spreading Islam.
“Mawlid is significant as it honours the Prophet’s legacy and positive impact on human life,”Maqari said.
He added that the celebration encouraged Muslims to rejuvenate their spiritual connection with Allah and Prophet Muhammad.
Also, Umar Yunusa, a devoted Mawlid follower, told NAN that the occasion served as a reminder of the Holy Prophet’s teachings.
“Regardless of debates surrounding Mawlid’s validity, I will join millions of Muslims in joyfully celebrating the Prophet’s birth and learning from his ways.
“In spite of criticisms from some Muslim sects, who argue that Mawlid is not explicitly mentioned in the Holy Quran and consider it a forbidden innovation (Bid’ah), the celebration remains significant for many Muslims worldwide,” Yunusa said.
During the Mawlid celebrations, Muslim faithful gather in Mosques and homes, adorn their surroundings, exchange salutations to the Holy Prophet, share food and drinks.
They also engage in activities such as, recounting stories of the Prophet’s life, reciting poems and promoting unity.
