Nigerian military says it has killed scores of Boko haram/ISWAP fighters that invaded a military base at Marte, a town in Northern Borno state.
AFP had earlier reported that Boko Haram terrorists aligned with the Islamic State captured a military base in Marte after overnight clashes with troops on Friday.
But a report by PRNigeria says Nigerian troops, acting on credible intelligence, tactically withdrew from their base before the terrorists’ invasion. It said the troops, however, returned, ambushed and killed scores of the terrorists at the base.
Quoting intelligence source, it said the ground troops and Air Task Force, which prosecuted the operation between 6:30 and 8:00pm, destroyed seven gun trucks belonging to the ISWAP insurgents, a development it said was later confirmed in a press release by Acting Director Defence Media Operations, Brigadier General Bernard Onyeuko.
