Justice Abdulhamid Mohammed Yakubu of the Gombe State High Court has convicted 25-year-old Hassan Mohammed, of Falangaya village in the Dukku Local Government Area, to death for murdering his former wife, Halima Sadiya Adamu.
The judge found Yakubu guilty of culpable homicide, punishable under Section 221 of the Penal Code Law.
The prosecution told the court that the convict on March 25, 2025, at about 1pm. attacked his former wife with a knife, slitting her throat after she refused his proposal to remarry him.
overlay-cleverThe State’s Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Barrister Abubakar Jungudo, who led the state’s legal team, said the offence directly violated Section 221 of the Penal Code.
When the charges were initially read to him, the defendant pleaded not guilty.
The prosecution presented six witnesses who testified regarding the events at the scene of the crime. The knife allegedly used in the murder was also tendered and admitted as an exhibit.
Counsel to the defendant, Barrister Habib Alkali, cross-examined all prosecution witnesses.
The defense later called the defendant as its sole witness, during which he denied committing the offense; however, he was subsequently cross-examined by the prosecution.
While ruling, Justice Yakubu, citing the consistent testimonies of witnesses, the physical exhibits, the defendant’s confessional statement, and the findings of the police investigation. held that the prosecution had proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt and found Yakubu guilty of culpable homicide for the killing.
