A tragic incident has claimed the life of a young man in Gwarzo Local Government Area of Kano State after he reportedly entered a well in a desperate attempt to retrieve a burning gas cylinder.
The Kano State Fire Service disclosed this in a statement released on Monday by its Public Relations Officer, Saminu Abdullahi.
The agency revealed that the incident occurred on Sunday evening at Saulawa Quarters in Gwarzo town. According to the statement, the Gwarzo Fire Service Unit received a distress call from a resident, Alhaji Dan Gwarzo, alerting them to the emergency.
The victim, identified as Ashahabu Ubale, reportedly climbed into the well to recover a gas cylinder that had earlier been thrown inside while still engulfed in flames.
The fire service explained that while Ubale was inside the well, the cylinder ruptured, releasing a significant amount of gas. The gas displaced the available oxygen within the confined space, causing him to suffocate.
Rescue personnel later recovered him from the well in an unconscious state and immediately transported him to a hospital for urgent medical attention. Sadly, medical doctors confirmed him dead shortly after arrival.
The Fire Service also raised concerns over the growing number of drowning-related incidents across the state. The agency cited a recent case involving an 18-year-old, Yusif Malam-Gwani, who drowned in a pond at Bachirawa, Kwanar Madugu, in Ungogo Local Government Area.
Similarly, the agency reported that an eight-year-old boy, Abdussalam Ibrahim, died after falling into a well at Kofar Yamma in Karaye town, Karaye Local Government Area.
The Fire Service therefore urged residents to exercise caution around open water sources and to closely monitor children to prevent further tragedies.
