Founder of Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN), Professor Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo, has awarded international scholarships to over 40 graduates of the institution.
This is following recent tensions over graduation fees that had strained relations between the university and some parents.
The announcement was made during MAAUN’s first-ever graduation ceremony, a landmark event that drew over 2,000 guests, including graduates, parents, academic and non-academic staff, dignitaries, and friends of the university from across Nigeria and beyond.
Addressing the audience, Professor Gwarzo reaffirmed the university’s core philosophy, stressing that character development is as important as academic excellence. He noted that knowledge without values is incomplete and urged the graduating students to aspire to become innovators and job creators, rather than merely job seekers.
He also commended parents for their trust and partnership in shaping the students’ futures.
The defining moment of the ceremony, however, came when Professor Gwarzo publicly forgave individuals who had attempted to malign his reputation or undermine the university during the fee controversy. In a powerful display of humility and leadership, he turned a period of adversity into an opportunity for growth by announcing the award of international scholarships to more than 40 First Class graduates.
According to the founder, the scholarships will enable the beneficiaries to pursue postgraduate studies at top universities of their choice anywhere in the world. He described the gesture as a clear demonstration of his personal commitment to student welfare and MAAUN’s broader mission of delivering quality education that is globally competitive and ethically grounded.
The development has underscored the importance of universities prioritizing student welfare, particularly in supporting those facing financial challenges. Observers say the scholarship initiative reflects MAAUN’s dedication to nurturing talent and rewarding excellence.
In a series of goodwill messages, the President of the University, the Vice President (Administration), and the Chancellor, Professor Mahmouda Salouhou, alongside Professor Sudhakar Kota, Vice-Chancellor of Hensard University, Bayelsa State, commended the University for its magnanimity urging others to follow its footsteps.
