Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati on Thursday called on different political parties to come together and accelerate the election of a new president to deal with urgent matters in Lebanon.
“I affirm, in my name and the name of the government, the priority of accelerating the election of a president,” Mikati said at a cabinet meeting, according to a statement released by the Council of Ministers.
“We also express support for a parliamentary dialogue and encourage the meeting of political forces for consultation and serious discussions that would lead to accelerating the election of a president,” the prime minister added.
Mikati said Lebanon was facing pressing economic and social issues, among which the most pressing one was the fluctuation of prices of goods and services, university and school tuition fees, hospitalisation bills, etc.
The Lebanese parliament failed to elect a new president for the republic, due to a lack of consensus among the different political parties, plunging Lebanon into further uncertainty with the country already suffering from the worst financial crisis in decades.
