Renowned broadcaster, Hajiya Lami Maccido, celebrated for her iconic presence on television in Kano, has passed away at the age of 72.
She died on Tuesday night following a brief illness. The news of her passing was announced on the WhatsApp platform of the Nigeria Union of Journalists by veteran journalist and a former NIJ state chapter chairman Ismaila Maizere.
In an obituary message, former NUJ chairman Ismail Ammai Maizere disclosed that her funeral prayer is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday at her residence along Gyadigyadi Courts Road within Kano metropolitan.
Information shared on her verified Facebook page indicated that Maccido was born on August 12, 1954, and she would have turned 72 later this year. Late Maccido has been among the first female broadcaster to have graced the screen.
Her death has triggered an avalanche of tributes from journalists, colleagues, and admirers who hailed her as a pathfinder and a model of professional excellence in broadcasting. Late Maccido earned widespread recognition as a pioneering editor with CTV67 now known as Abubakar Rimi Television, where she built a strong reputation for professionalism.
Her commanding screen presence and distinctive voice made her one of the most prominent figures on Kano’s broadcast scene during the 1980s and 1990s. It was gathered that her news bulletins during her peak years captivated audiences, often bringing activities in the city to a halt as viewers tuned in to listen to her precise articulation and authoritative delivery of the state’s news.
However, beyond her achievements on screen, Maccido was widely respected for her discipline, mentorship, and commitment to public service broadcasting. At a time when media competition was minimal, her credibility and calm style of delivery helped strengthen public confidence in broadcast journalism across Kano and neighbouring regions. She was since buried according to Islamic rites.
