A member representing Tarauni Constituency in the Kano House of Assembly, Kabiru Sule, has sponsored free eye surgery for 1,500 members of his constituents to treat cataract, trachoma and provide eyeglasses.
The screening and treatment of the eye defects would be conducted by the Visions Savers Eye Care Center at Tarauni primary health care centre.
Sule on Wednesday, said the gesture was aimed at helping the patients to regain their normal, adding that the intervention was aimed at supporting vulnerable persons with eye challenges who could not afford to pay for medical services.
“This is a pilot programme where 1,500 patients will benefit. The beneficiaries will be made up of the aged, vulnerable persons, women, and children.
“Each beneficiary will have access to eye treatment, surgery, and drugs during the exercise,” he added.
The lawmaker promised to initiate other programmes on education and youth empowerment.
Earlier, Gov. Abba Kabir Yusuf, praised the lawmaker for the gesture, saying the programme was in line with the party’s manifesto towards supporting the poor.
Represented by the Speaker, Alhaji Ismail Falgore, the governor described the intervention as a welcome development and called on other members to emulate Sule’s gesture and reach out to the helpless poor.
