The Kano State Government has threatened to shut down any private school found increasing school fees without official approval as stipulated in the conduct guidelines.
The Executive Secretary of the Kano State Private and Voluntary Institutions Board, Baba Abubakar Umar, issued the warning during a media briefing in Kano. According to him, the law establishing the board in 2014 stipulates that any increment in school fees must be approved by both the government and the school’s Parents Teachers Association (PTA). He explained that any school found violating this provision will be sanctioned in accordance with the law.
He also cautioned school proprietors against compelling parents to purchase textbooks, uniforms, cardigans, or other non-essential items directly from the schools, especially those that do not directly support academic learning.
The ES also emphasized that the board will exercise its mandate to ensure compliance with the law, but it will not be used to intimidate proprietors.
While urging parents to verify whether fee increases have received board approval whenever they are notified of any changes by the schools, the ES said the board will continue to support an effective and viable education system in the state and pleaded with parents to pay school fees promptly to enable proprietors to run their schools effectively.
