The Kano State House of Assembly on Wednesday announced the suspension of Chairman of Rano local government council, Muhammad Nazir Yau, for three months.

The suspension, according to a statement issued by the assembly’s public relations officer, Kamaluddeen Shawai, followed a submission of an interim report of the house committee on a public petition headed by house majority leader Hussaini Lawan Chediyalr Yan Gurasa.

The statement further revealed that the suspension is to allow for further investigation into allegations of misconduct, abuse of office, diversion and misappropriation of public funds levelled against him by elected councillors of the council.

Some of the allegations leveled against the chairman include deliberate instigation of conflict and disunity among political leaders and councillors in the local council; engaging in divisive political activities by selectively distributing government resources only to his political allies; selective distribution of Dangote school forms,GES fertiliser and government fertiliser, selling above the ₦20,000 approved by the government without the councillors’ knowledge.

Other allegations include mismanagement and non-transparent handling of revenue from markets, cattle levies and other income; unauthorised sale and allocation of market stalls, newly constructed shops without the knowledge of Rano legislative council among others.

Similarly, the statement also revealed that the assembly had asked the Ministry for local government and chieftency affairs to direct the vice chairman of the council to assume duty as the chairman in acting capacity pending conclusion of investigation into the allegations.

It was also reported that the committee had sat with the two parties on Tuesday August 11 where the chairman dismissed some of the allegations as baseless admitting however that he increased the price of fertiliser by ₦2000 above the approved price of ₦20,000.

The statement stated that the committee reliee on the section 55(1-6)of the local government law 2006 to affirmed the suspension of Rano local government council for 3 months to allow for full investigation.
