As the South West geo-political zone is engulfed with June 12 protests by youths in the region, there seems to be relative calm in the South East geo-political zone, which housed the separatist group, proscribed Indegenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
The IPOB, led by Nnamdi Kanu, has been agitating for seccession of the South East from Nigeria.
It has in recent time conducted bloody attacks against security agencies in the region and burnt many federal government properties.
Many people had earlier opined that the seccesionist group could also take advantage of Democracy Day celebration and planned June 12 protest to echo its stands.
However, the situation was different as it was business as usual in the SouthEast region as people moved about freely.
Sources in the region said the atmosphere in Awka, Anambra State capital, was peaceful and orderly.
People opened their shops and offices in the state and carried out their business unchallenged .
Owerri, Imo State capital, which has recorded disturbing incidents in recent time was calm on Nigeria’s Democracy Day.
While some residents managed to to go out, others preferred to stay indoors.
The police commands in the five states of the region had on Friday asked residents to go about their duties without let or hindrance
