The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo on Thursday urged Nigerians to remain committed to democratic values as the country marked Democracy Day.
A statement by Chris Nehikhare, Publicity Secretary of Edo PDP Caretaker Committee, said democracy was rooted in participation, accountability, and the people’s sovereign will.
“As we mark Democracy Day, we reflect on Nigeria’s journey and our commitment to freedom, justice, and inclusive governance for all people,” he said.
He emphasised that in Edo, there was immense pride in the people’s longstanding dedication to democracy and pursuit of good governance.
According to Nehikhare, Edo people express deep faith in democracy through active participation, peaceful elections, and persistent demand for accountable and transparent leadership.
He noted that Edo remained a shining model of democracy in action, shaped by resilience, civic engagement, and commitment to a just society.
While acknowledging economic, social, and political challenges, he stressed that Nigeria must continue to improve democratic institutions and honour progress made since returning to civil rule.
According to Nehikhare, democracy, though imperfect, allows redress of past injustices, promotes healing, and helps build a fairer and more inclusive national future.
He urged citizens to use the democracy day to recommit to transparency, equity, the rule of law, and the protection of basic human rights for all.
According to him, democracy must bring real dividends, better services, accountable governance, and strong institutions reflecting the people’s will and national development goals.
He urged Nigerians to remain hopeful, stay engaged civically, and unite in protecting and advancing democracy for the present and future generations.
