The Nigerian military on Saturday confirmed the killing commander of the 28th Brigade of Task Force in Chibok, Brigadier General Dzarma Zirkushu, by ISWAP fighters.
The terrorists killed the general, along with three other soldiers, while on their way to reinforce the troops in the village of Bungulwa, near Askira Uba, in Borno State.
Army spokesperson, Brig.-General Onyeama Nwachukwu who confirmed the State in a statement said that troops successfully defended their location and destroyed ISWAP equipment during the battle.
The statement said.“Operation HADIN KAI’s Joint Task Force North-East troops neutralized several terrorists from the Islamic State of West Africa and ISWAP during a recent meeting in the local government of Askira Uba in Borno State.
“In the fierce confrontation that still rages at the time of this report’s filing, OPHK air component-supported troops have destroyed five A-Jets, two A-29s, two Dragon combat vehicles and nine Gun Trucks.
“Sadly, a valiant senior officer Brigadier General Dzarma Zirkusu and three soldiers made the ultimate sacrifice in a very rare display of bravery as they stepped up a counteroffensive against the terrorists and successfully defended the location.
“The family of the senior officer and the military have been contacted.
“Army Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Faruk Yahaya has deep compassion for the families and relationships of fallen heroes. He also ordered the troops to continue their fierce counter-offensive and their relentless pursuit to eliminate the remains of the fleeing terrorists,.”
