The Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) on Friday, released a video detailing how its fighters attacked Tukur Yusufu Buratai Institute for War and Peace (TBI), a research Institute of the Nigerian Army University, located in Buratai Village, Biu Local Government Area of Borno State.
The management of the university had earlier confirmed that two civilians lost their lives during the Monday attack.
“The terrorists who came in their numbers were met by superior firepower forcing them to retreat in disarray. Unfortunately, 2 civilian staff of the Institute paid the supreme price.
“Management wishes to commend troops for their gallantry during the attack and to commiserate with families of the fallen staff.
“Finally, management wishes to assure the general public that the Institute remains 100% operational as Security has been beefed up in the general area,” the institution’s management had explained in a statement after the attack.
However, the video released by the insurgents indicated that there was no resistance from the military amid sporadic shooting from the ISWAP fighters during the attack.
It is however unclear whether there were more casualties apart from the two civilians confirmed killed by the institution management.
In the video, ISWAP men were seen pulling down flags and torching some military vehicles.
Locals confirmed that the insurgents stormed the school in large numbers shooting RPGs and anti-aircraft guns.
The development was said to have triggered mass exodus from the town by residents who sought refuge elsewhere.
