The General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces has harshly criticized the European Parliament’s “desperate” call for the European Union and its member states to include the elite Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) on the bloc’s “terror” list, warning of the consequences for regional and global peace and stability.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces said in a statement on Thursday that the European Parliament’s stupid request violates all international norms.
“In addition to being unprecedented in international rules and regulations, the recent move by the European Parliament will affect regional and global security, tranquility and peace, and the European Parliament must be careful about its consequences,” the statement read.
The statement commended the IRGC as a “strong and popular” institution and emphasized the elite military force’s critical role in combating terrorism in the region.
The European countries could today be under the control of the Daesh terrorist organisation if it hadn’t been for the IRGC’s outstanding efforts in the resistance front, led by Iran’s martyred Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani.
It highlighted that Iran’s Armed Forces, notably the IRGC, would never relinquish their mission of defending security, national interests, and the lofty values of the Islamic Revolution, as well as their ongoing conflicts with terrorists supported by the US, UK, and Israeli regimes.
“The hostile governments will understand soon that they have made a mistake in their calculations once again,” the statement said.
The European Parliament’s legislation, which is following in the footsteps of the US and the phony Israeli state, displayed its unlawful “dual and counter-security methods” to the world.
Members of the European Parliament backed an amendment to its annual foreign policy report on Wednesday, calling for “the EU and its member states to include the IRGC on the EU’s terror list.”
The hostile measure was approved with 598 votes in favor, nine against, and 31 abstentions.
The amendment will request that the IRGC military force, the volunteer Basij force, and the IRGC’s Quds Force be blacklisted by Brussels.
It would also target “any economic and financial activity involving firms and commercial activities associated to, totally or partially owned by, or fronting for, the IRGC or IRGC-affiliated people, regardless of their place of operation.”
In a phone call with EU foreign policy leader Josep Borrell on Thursday, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said the European Parliament had “shot Europe in the foot” by labeling the IRGC as a terrorist group.
Amir-Abdollahian slammed the European Parliament’s “emotional, imprudent, inaccurate, and unprofessional” response, which he said contradicted political rationality and decency.
