The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Rivers says it is prepared to commence the claims and objections exercise for the second phase of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Prof. Gabriel Yomere, disclosed this via a statement by the commission’s Head, Voter Education and Publicity, Mrs Geraldine Ekelemu.

Yomere stated that the exercise would begin on April 29 and end on May 5 in the 23 Local Government Area offices of the commission.

According to him, the exercise is coming on the heels of the conclusion of the second phase of the CVR.

He explained that the process was designed to enable individuals, who registered, transferred or updated their voter details, to verify their information.

Yomere emphasised that it would also help voters check for any omission or errors in their registration details.

The REC further stated that the exercise would provide an opportunity for the public to scrutinise the preliminary register.

He maintained that the public could object to the inclusion of ineligible persons, such as deceased persons, foreigners and underage persons.

Yomere explained that valid objections would lead to the removal of such names from the preliminary voter register.

He emphasised the importance of the exercise, adding that it would help ensure the integrity of the voters’ register.

He emphasised that a credible register is critical to the conduct of free, fair and transparent elections, and urged all registered voters in the state to participate actively in the exercise.

The REC stated that the exercise was part of preparations for the 2027 General Elections.

He assured the public of the commission’s commitment to credible electoral processes, and also encouraged stakeholders to support the exercise to ensure its success.

Yomere reiterated the commission’s commitment towards strengthening Nigeria’s electoral system.
