The Independent National Electoral Commission says it is ready to hold the forthcoming 2023 governorship and House of Assembly election in Sokoto State.
The National Commissioner in charge of the elections in Sokoto State, Major General Modibo Alkali (retd.), disclosed this at a stakeholders’ meeting with the leadership of political parties ahead of the forthcoming election.
It would be recalled that due to violence that trailed the presidential and National Assembly elections on February 25, INEC canceled the results of the election due to the disruption of not more than 471 polling units during the election.
INEC said there were irregularities in the conduct of the February 25th National Assembly elections in Sokoto state which resulted in the removal of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state among other things.
In place of the suspended REC General Alkali was deployed to the state to supervise the forthcoming election billed for march 18.
Speaking on Tuesday, Alkali told leaders of political parties present at the meeting that the commission under his watch will ensure a hitch-free election.
He reaffirmed that the commission has concluded its reconfiguration work on the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System machine for the polls.
He said INEC will not tolerate anyone who goes against the electoral act during the election.
“I have the mandate to ensure whoever causes problems during the election no matter how highly placed such a person is will be arrested.
