The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has begun restructuring of some of its departments ahead of 2023 elections.
The Departments of Legal Services, Clearance and Complaints (LSC&CC) and that of Voter Education and Publicity (VEP) are the ones being affected.
INEC National Commissioner and chairman Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC), Festus Okoye, who disclosed this on Thursday night in Abuja, said a Department of Litigation and Prosecution (DL&P) and a Department of Legal Drafting and Clearance (LDCD) have been created from the Department of Legal Services, Clearance and Complaints.
According to him, as the commission prepares for major off cycle governorship elections and the 2023 general election, it has become imperative to review and realign some of its departments for improved effectiveness and efficient management of its human resources and assets.
Okoye said in place of the Voter Education, Publicity, Gender and Civil Society Liaison Department (VEP) the commission is to establish two other departments namely the Voter Education and Publicity Department (VEP), as well as the Gender and Inclusivity Department (GID),” Okoye said.
He said the changes which are with immediate effect, were urgent as the commission wants to strengthen its statutory powers of prosecuting electoral offenders.
