The policies and programmes of the military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida still stand the test of time, Niger State Governor Abubakar Sani Bello has said.
Bello, in his congratulatory message to the elder statesman on the occasion of his 80th birthday, said Babangida’s doggedness and resolve in nation-building were crucial to the stability, national and international unity as well as the development of the country.
Babangida who ruled Nigeria from 1985 to 1993 has been described by many of his contemporaries and allies as a courageous soldier and a great leader who led from the front and did exceptionally well.
Governor Bello said the former military leader has remained an invaluable guardian, indispensable, and relevant in the country’s match towards nationhood.
He said even as the Babangida was advancing in age, he remained an asset to the country, as his wise counsel and advice were needed for the growth and development of the country.
“On a day like this, memories of your courage, invaluable service to the Nigerian Army in protecting the sovereignty of the country and your exemplary leadership qualities which have indeed been helping and stimulating the younger generations for better service to the county,” Bello said.
“My fervent prayer for you is to continue to enjoy good health and may Almighty Allah also strengthen you as well as grant you many more years accompanied by the boundless blessings of Allah to continue to reap the reward of your hard work.”
