Former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua had a kidney transplant when he was made the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2007 general elections.
This was revealed by former President Olusegun Obasanjo in a virtual interview with a Nigerian historian, Professor Toyin Falola.
The former leader, however, said the late Yar’Adua was certified medically fit to run for the election.
Obasanjo said it was “absolute and total nonsense” to say he knew Yar’Adua was sick before the 2007 elections. He said it is unbelievable for someone like him “deliberately weaken the country that I fought for? The country of my birth. The country I want (it) to be great.”
He said before the 2007 elections, “I asked for his medical report which was sent to me and I sent it to one of the best doctors of our time and a good friend of mine who died only last year, Professor Akinkugbe.
He said the doctor cleared Yar’Adua, saying since Yar’Adua was no longer under dialysis, he was fit to run for the elections.
