Police in Kaduna state have confirmed killing a student of College of Education Gidan Way in Jema’a local government area of Kaduna State during a protest on Monday.
Students of the school Monday morning protested over increase in school fees by the state government.
Spokesperson of the state Police command, Mohammed Jalige, said in a statement that the student died after sustaining injuries following a clash between police operatives and the protesting students.
Jalige said said three students were initially injured while the operatives were shooting sporadically to enforce peace at the area.
He said the three students were conveyed to a medical facility where one was confirmed dead.
Jalige said normalcy has been restored to the area as the Commissioner of Police in the state, UM Muri, urged students and management of the institution to remain calm.
Kaduna State Government had in April increased tuition fee of state-owned tertiary institution by 500 percent, thereby sparking condemnation from parents and the Acadamic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The development had also sparked protest by students of the state university.
The university’s chapter chairman of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Dr Peter Adamu had said that 75 percent of the university’s students may drop out of school due to the monumental increase in tuition fees.
President of ASUU, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, had during a television interview described the development as “sad and terrible, especially at this time when an average parent can hardly feed and can hardly take care of their children.”
