The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) says the riot that broke out in Bauchi prison on Friday was caused by an officer who wanted to smuggle a mobile phone into the centre for the use of inmates
The NCS said this in a statement on Saturday.
Five inmates were injured during that fracas.
The statement said the brawl occurred between two inmates who were to benefit from the mobile phone deal and other staff members who got wind of the plan.
Five inmates were injured in the process.
The statement said: “This is clearly illegal and against the rules. The officer has therefore been apprehended and is being interrogated.
“The restive inmates have also been put under control while the staff involved is undergoing interrogation as ordered by the State Controller. This regrettable development is being investigated.”
“The Controller once again reminded them of the far-reaching implications of smuggling prohibited items, particularly mobile phones, into custodial centres.”
