Gov. Uba Sani of Kaduna State says his administration has significantly expanded access to tertiary education in Kaduna State by reducing tuition fees in state-owned institutions by 50%.
He spoke through his Principal Private Secretary, Prof. Bello Ayuba, at the inauguration of the State University’s (KASU) chapter of the Students’ Union and a public lecture.
The Governor said the fees’ reduction had enabled students from low-income backgrounds to pursue university degrees with a relative ease.
Sani expressed gratitude to the students for honouring him with the ‘Sword of Honour Award’ and for highlighting his administration’s achievements during the event.
He assured continued government’s support to the students and youths, urging them to maintain peace to allow development initiatives to thrive.
Sani cautioned against being influenced by elements seeking to destabilise communities, emphasising that progress cannot be achieved amidst chaos and disunity.
Reflecting on past security challenges, the governor said significant improvements had been made, allowing the farmers to return to their lands and markets to reopen, including the Birnin Gwari cattle market which had been closed for over a decade.
He also highlighted infrastructural strides over the last 22 months, including over 78 road projects spanning 775 kilometres, with many completed, especially in rural areas.
Additionally, he stated the remodeling of General Hospitals, upgrades to 255 healthcare centres, construction and renovation of schools to improve the learning environment.
The students’ union praised Sani for the tuition’s reduction, establishment of new faculties, and the construction of the CBN-supported Faculty of Engineering project at KASU.
They also commended his directive allowing students with outstanding fees to write exams, describing it as a clear demonstration of his commitment to inclusive education and youths empowerment.
