Police in Kaduna have arrested a suspected gunrunner and over 200 live ammunition on January 17, 2024 in the state.
The police said the arrest took place when officers from the Divisional Police Headquarters Tudun Wada, Zaria, on Tactical Operation Duty, intercepted Musa Yusuf of Zurmi LGA, Zamfara State, who was carrying a suspicious handbag on a commercial motorcycle.
This was disclosed in a statement issued by the command’s public relations officer, ASP Mansir Hassan, on Tuesday.
According to him, upon alighting from the motorcycle, the suspect abandoned his bag and attempted to escape on sighting the police.
He was apprehended, and a search of his handbag revealed 202 rounds of 7.62 x 39mm live ammunition.
“Preliminary investigation disclosed that Yusuf was running an errand for a bandit known as Emir in the Zurmi forest. His task was to collect the ammunition at Bakin Kogi in Kauru LGA, Kaduna State, and deliver them to the bandits.
“While he succeeded in collecting the ammunition, he was intercepted by vigilant police officers before completing the delivery,” he said.
The police said ongoing investigations aim to apprehend Yusuf’s accomplices, and the case will be charged to court upon completion.
The Commissioner of Police for Kaduna State, CP A.D Ali, commended the alertness of the officers and urged increased visibility policing to deter criminals in the state.
