Guinea-Bissau’s Transitional President, Horta Inta-A, has called a national referendum for Aug. 30 to determine whether a newly approved constitution should come into force.
The decision was contained in a presidential decree published on Monday following a proposal that received a favourable opinion from the Supreme Court of Justice.
According to the decree, the referendum will be conducted through universal, direct, secret and personal suffrage, with voters casting either a “Yes” or “No” vote.
The referendum is expected to decide the fate of a new constitution previously approved by the National Transitional Council, which currently serves as the country’s legislative body.
The National Transitional Council has functioned as Guinea-Bissau’s legislative authority since the military takeover that occurred in November 2025.
In January, the transitional authorities announced plans to hold presidential and legislative elections on Dec. 6 as part of efforts to restore constitutional order.
