Protesters have stormed the headquarters of the Federal Character Commission (FCC) in Abuja, demanding the removal of the chairman of the commission, Dr. Muheeba Farida Dankaka, over alleged “financial misappropriation and gross misconduct.”
The protesters stormed the headquarters of the commission located at Wuse Zone 3, Abuja, Tuesday, carrying placards with various inscriptions “Muheeba must go”.
The protesters under the aegis of the National Youth Council of Nigeria issued a three weeks ultimatum to President Muhammadu Buhari to remove the FCC chairman.
Speaking on behalf of the protesters, the immediate past President of the NYCN, Murtala Gamji, said they were there to express their anger over the way the FCC chairman is conducting the affairs of the commission.
“Among our grouses is the refusal of the national chairman to render accounts of financial transactions as it concerns income and expenditure of the commission, even of assets,” Gamji said.
“This is clearly at variance with the financial rules and regulations of the commission and that of the public service,” he said.
However, FCC Commissioner representing Bayelsa State, Tonye Okinyo, commended the peaceful conduct of the protesters, adding that their issues would be looked into.
When contacted for further comment, a spokesperson of the commission, said “I will not say anything other than the response given by Mr Okinyo.”
21st CENTURY CHRONICLE reports that some of the commissioners in the FCC had on November 28, 2020, petitioned President Muhammadu Buhari over alleged “abuse of power” by the chairman.
The FCC board was inaugurated in June 2020 by the president.
