A template to implement financial autonomy for state legislature and judiciary has been approved by the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF)
This was contained in a communique issued by the Chairman of the Forum and Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, on Thursday after the forum’s meeting on Wednesday.
He said the template was developed following a meeting with state attorneys-general and commissioners of finance.
He said the template was drawn up from a memorandum they signed with Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) and the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN).
President Muhammadu Buhari had on May 22, 2020 signed the executive order 10 granting financial autonomy to the legislature and judiciary across the 36 states of the country. Thereby making it mandatory for all states to include the allocations of both the legislature and the judiciary in the first-line charge of their budgets.
The JUSUN and PASAN embarked on strike for months over refusal of governors to grant financial autonomy to the legislature and judiciary, and had to suspend the strike after the governors agreed to grant them financial autonomy.
