The political landscape of Gombe State has rarely witnessed the level of excitement, anticipation and intense rivalry currently unfolding ahead of the 2027 governorship election. While no fewer than five other political parties have presented candidates for the state’s highest office, public attention has overwhelmingly gravitated towards two political heavyweights, Jamilu Isyaku Gwamna of the APC and Isa Ali Pantami of the PDP. By every indication, they have become the principal gladiators in what promises to be one of the most fiercely contested elections in the state’s democratic history.
The political engagements are gathering momentum by the day. Both camps appear determined to outmatch each other in mobilisation, publicity and political strategy. Understandably, the considerable resources at their disposal have heightened the intensity of the contest, creating an atmosphere that has turned Gombe into a major centre of political attraction. Political observers, party faithful and interested Nigerians are watching developments with unusual curiosity as the contest gradually assumes national significance.
For Jamilu Isyaku Gwamna, his appeal lies largely in his accomplishments outside public office. Having remained outside the corridors of political power for almost two decades, he has nonetheless sustained a visible presence through business ventures, philanthropy and community interventions. Many beneficiaries of his generosity readily point to scholarships, employment opportunities, business support and humanitarian assistance as evidence that public service is not confined to holding political office. His supporters therefore argue that he has demonstrated the capacity to impact lives through private initiative rather than government patronage.
Isa Ali Pantami, on the other hand, draws strength from his years in public service. Between approximately 2015 and 2023, he served in the Federal Government, rising to become Minister of Communications and Digital Economy. Throughout that period, he became associated with numerous empowerment initiatives, digital economy reforms and programmes that many beneficiaries regard as transformative. Unsurprisingly, these achievements have become central to his political message as he seeks to persuade voters that his experience in government provides the competence required to lead Gombe State.
It is therefore unsurprising that each candidate believes he possesses the stronger credentials. One presents himself as a successful private-sector leader whose impact preceded political ambition; the other relies on his record in public office and the opportunities created during his years in government. Both arguments deserve objective consideration by the electorate.
Political competition should never descend into personal hostility. The increasing temperature of political exchanges, particularly among supporters, should concern everyone who cherishes the peace for which Gombe has long been known. Elections are temporary, but the relationships among citizens endure long after campaign posters are removed and victory speeches delivered.
Both Gwamna and Pantami occupy enviable positions in the political history of Gombe State. Their supporters understandably celebrate their achievements and promote their respective visions. However, leadership is demonstrated not only by the ability to inspire followers but also by the discipline to restrain them. The responsibility rests on both camps to ensure that political disagreements do not degenerate into bitterness, violence or lasting divisions.
Ultimately, sovereignty belongs to the people of Gombe State. They alone will determine who occupies the Government House in 2027. Candidates should therefore compete vigorously on ideas, programmes and character rather than inflammatory rhetoric or personal attacks.
There is life beyond politics. Today’s opponents may become tomorrow’s partners in governance or nation-building. Political offices are transient, but the peace, unity and development of Gombe State are permanent responsibilities.
As the political theatrics intensify, all stakeholders must remember one enduring truth: no individual, however influential or accomplished, is greater than Gombe State. The true victory in 2027 will not simply be the emergence of a governor; it will be the preservation of the peace, dignity and democratic maturity of a state whose future is far more important than the ambitions of any single contender.
