Thousands of Muslims in Kano held a peaceful protests on Saturday, rejecting U.S. President Donald Trump’s claims that the Nigerian government is enabling genocide against Christians.
The peaceful protesters under the banner of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria under the leadership of Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky also described the allegations as false and divisive.
In a statement read during a peaceful procession in Kano, Professor Abdullahi Danladi of the movement’s Resource Forum, said the Trump’s remarks were part of Western propaganda aimed at sowing religious discord and justifying interference in African affairs.
The movement said that Nigeria’s challenges stem from corruption and political manipulation, not religion, stressing that both Muslims and Christians have equally suffered from insecurity.
They accused Western powers of hypocrisy, saying their interventions in other countries have caused massive destruction while pretending to defend human rights.
Reaffirming its commitment to interfaith harmony, the movement urged Nigerians to resist divisive narratives.
The movement also called on the federal government to address injustice and inequality which are the the true roots of unrest in the country.
