Nigerian Women have stormed the National Assembly to protest the rejection of a bill seeking to provide special seats for women.
Also rejected at the plenary on Tuesday, was a bill seeking to “provide reserve quota” for women on appointments.
A total of 88 senators registered to vote. 44 senators voted yes, while 43 voted no, and 1 abstained.
Abiola Akiyode-Afolabi, a Nigerian lawyer and civil rights activist, during a virtual media briefing attended by civil society organisations (CSOs) on Tuesday, said Nigeria women would storm the National Assembly to express their disappointment today.
It was learnt that women started gathering at the National Assembly from 8:am on Wednesday, forcing security operatives to shut the gate.
“Nigerian women demand that all gender bills be reconsidered.
“We call on the national assembly to re-present these bills as a matter of urgency and ensure that they are passed,” Akiyode-Afolabi said.
