International Criminal Court chief prosecutor says he is seeking arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defence Minister Yoav Gallant and three Hamas leaders.
More than 100 Palestinians have been killed in the past 24 hours, the Gaza health ministry said, as Israel intensified its attacks across the enclave.
Doctors Without Borders reports that the besieged al-Awda Hospital close to the Jabalia refugee camp has completely run out of drinking water.
Meanwhile, hunger has gripped the enclave, with the UN humanitarian chief on Sunday warning of “apocalyptic” consequences of aid shortages as key Rafah and Karem Abu Salem (Kerem Shalom) crossings remain “effectively blocked.”
At least 35,562 people have been killed and 79,652 wounded in Israeli attacks on Gaza since October 7.
The death toll in Israel from Hamas’s attack is 1,139, with dozens still held captive.
The ICC is also seeking arrest warrants against two other top Hamas leaders — Mohammed Diab Ibrahim al-Masri, the leader of the Al Qassem Brigades who is better known as Mohammed Deif, and Ismail Haniyeh, Hamas’ political leader.
The warrants against the Israeli politicians mark the first time the ICC has targeted the top leader of a close ally of the United States. The decision puts Netanyahu in the company of Russian President Vladimir Putin, for whom the ICC issued an arrest warrant over Moscow’s war on Ukraine.
