Former Kano State Governor, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has put on hold his plan to establish an independent Hisbah group known as Hisbah Fisabilillahi in the state.
21st Century Chronicle had earlier reported that Ganduje, who is also the immediate past National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), disclosed plans to engage about 12,000 Hisbah personnel disengaged by the state government into the proposed independent body.
According to Ganduje, the group was to operate under the Ganduje Foundation, with registration forms already being distributed to prospective volunteers. However, the Kano State Government outlawed the move and directed security agencies to clamp down on the initiative.
A few days later, an APC chieftain in Kano and Director-General of the National Productivity Centre, Baffa Babba Dan-Agundi, announced the suspension of the plan on behalf of the former governor.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Dan-Agundi said the decision followed a stakeholders’ meeting that brought together representatives from all the 44 local government areas of Kano State. He noted that the meeting took place at the Tinubu Campaign Office in Kano.
Dan-Agundi explained that the decision to step back was taken in response to widespread public reactions and concerns generated by the proposed establishment of a parallel Hisbah outfit.
He added that key stakeholders, including the Kano State Government, the Department of State Services (DSS), and Ganduje himself, intervened in the matter with the aim of ensuring peace and stability in the state.
“The stakeholders resolved to suspend the plan in order to allow the Kano State Government to review the disengagement of some Hisbah personnel and address the matter through dialogue and mutual understanding,” the statement said.
The statement also reaffirmed respect for the legally constituted Kano State Hisbah Board and expressed commitment to supporting constituted security agencies in maintaining law and order in the state.
