Four persons have lost their lives in a stampede during the distribution of Ramadan gifts (zakat ) for the poor in Bauchi State.
Many other persons, especially women and children, were injured in the stampede which occurred at the Shafa Holdings Company Plc along Jos Road, on Sunday at about 10 am.
However, the identities of those who died could not be ascertained as at the time of this report.
One of the wounded, 17-year-old Naima Abdullahi, is currently receiving medical treatment at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital in Bauchi.
The state police spokesperson Ahmed Wakili, said the situation has been brought under the control.
Wakili said the police had dispersed the crowd and are maintaining vigil in the area.
Even at that, a few women have refused to return home, expecting that the zakat distribution would continue.
