Former Kano state commissioners have instituted legal action against the Kano State Government following the seizure of their official vehicles.
The former commissioners, who resigned shortly after Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), said they approached the court to seek interpretation of the law governing the provision of official vehicles to political office holders.
In a press statement signed by retired Air Vice Marshal Umar Ibrahim on behalf of the affected officials, the group disclosed that the Office of the Secretary to the State Government had formally directed them to return the vehicles issued to them during their tenure.
They however said the vehicles were provided in line with the Revised 2023 Revenue Mobilization and Fiscal Commission Act, which they said entitles certain categories of public and political office holders to such benefits. They also referenced a former Commissioner for Transport who reportedly retained his vehicle after resigning earlier.
They said the matter escalated after they filed a court process to protect what they described as their legally guaranteed rights and privileges. They alleged that operatives subsequently stormed their residences and removed personal vehicles belonging to their spouses, an action they described as intimidation and a violation of their personal liberty.
The former officials condemned what they termed a “vindictive approach” by the state government, insisting that they had served Kano diligently for over two years, initially using their personal vehicles for official engagements before the allocation of government vehicles about four months ago.
