The Katarko bridge in Yobe state, which connects various areas of the Borno to Yobe, Adamawa, and Gombe states, has collapsed after heavy rain on tuesday.
The Yobe State Executive Secretary of State Emergency Management Agency, Dr Mohammed Goje confirmed the collapse of the Katarko bridge on Tuesday.
“While this may affect immediate life saving support to communities already affected by Flood and or recovering from conflict, Yobe State Government is improvising alternative routes to reach persons of concern as well as reconnect the affected communities.” Dr. Goje stated.
He said the Yobe State Government under the leadership of Governor Mai Mala Buni is partnering with Save The Children International (SCI), a Non- Governmental Organization to support flood victims, as each household is to receive N33,000 monthly for the period of five months.
A pregnant woman was killed and three vehicles washed awayin the Katarko bridge collapse, on the only safer Maiduguri-Damaturu-Biu Road and bridge near Buratai village also fell just 24 hours later.
The Katarko axis is no longer accessible, forcing motorists and passengers traveling from Biu to Maiduguri to take a detour and transit through the villages of Darazau or Bakoka in Gombe state before arriving in Potiskum to Damaturu on Tuesday.
