The Kano State police command has dismantled a notorious syndicate of fake police officers who had been terrorizing unsuspecting citizens across Kano, Katsina, and Kaduna States.
The suspects identified as Aliyu Abbas (35), Sani Iliyasu (47), Ashiru Sule (41), Abubakar Yahaya (45), and Adamu Kalilu (45) were arrested by operatives of the command’s Special Intervention Squad (SIS) on October 16, 2025, following a swift and well-coordinated intelligence-led operation.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the suspects were apprehended while parading themselves as genuine officers of the Nigeria Police Force. Upon arrest, operatives recovered several incriminating items, including a fake police warrant card, handcuffs, N2,500 in CFA currency, mutilated naira notes of various denominations, and their operational vehicle a blue Peugeot 406 with registration number NSR-188-BD.
According to Kiyawa, preliminary investigations revealed shocking details of the group’s activities adding that the impostors allegedly used fake police identification to extort money from innocent citizens, harass motorists, and engage in criminal intimidation across major cities in the North-West.
“The suspects have confessed to a series of impersonations and fraudulent operations and they would be charged to court upon completion of the investigation,” he said.
Reacting to the arrest, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, PhD, commended the operatives for their professionalism and swift response. He reaffirmed the Command’s zero tolerance for any form of criminal impersonation, vowing that Kano would not be a safe haven for fraudsters in uniform.
