Lt. Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (ret. ), a former minister of defense, has started an initiative to build the first Anglican University in northern Nigeria.
The proposed university is to be sited in Dikko, Niger State.
A statement released on Thursday by Muhammad Bello, Special Adviser for Media and Publicity to the Governor of Sokoto State on Thursday, the former minister said that the project had been in progress for the previous two years.
He said, “Two years ago, a group of determined academics and bishops led by Prof. Adamu Baikie, the first don of education in northern Nigeria, gathered and discussed the concept of establishing the university.
“Good progress has been made in the establishment of the institution,” he continued, “and we are requesting your support and collaboration.”
Governors of the states of Sokoto, Edo, Niger, and Taraba, respectively, Aminu Tambuwal, Godwin Obaseki, Abubakar Bello, and Architect Darius Ishaku, were among the notable attendees at the opening event held at The Wheat Baker Hotel.
Others were Sen. Tunde Ogbeha, David Mark, Emeka Ihedioha, a former governor of Imo state, and Prof. Jerry Gana, a former minister of information.
Gilbert Chagoury, a Nigerian wealthy businessman and philanthropist who lives in Paris, Admiral Bode George (rtd), and Alex Ibru were also in attendance.
