Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, has disclosed that plans are afoot by the federal government to stem the rising price of cooking gas, which has hit over N14,000 per kilogram in the country.
The minister gave the assurance at the distribution of gas cylinders to about 300 women in Lagos State, under the Decade of Gas Initiative.
“I got that information this morning that the price of cooking gas is rising again. So, what I am going to do is I will invite the regulators and the producers and have a meeting with them. We are looking to bring down the price so that it will be affordable,” Ekpo stated.
The minister said the energy security of the government is about affordability and availability and it was going to ensure that whatever the reason behind the hike in price, will be addressed to bring it down.”
Ekpo said the distribution of cylinders is part of the government’s initiative to give 1 million homes access to clean cooking by the year 2030.
He, therefore, encouraged the women to move from cooking with firewood, kerosene, and charcoal to LPG, saying it is clean, safe, and good for the environment, and not sell them, assuring that gas would be available for them at a cheaper rate.
