In a latest move to weaken the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the federal government has registered two new academic unions on Tuesday.
The new unions are the Nigerian Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA), and the Congress of Nigerian University Academics (CONUA).
The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, presented both unions with certificates of registration at the ministry headquarters in Abuja.
The minister said, “These associations will exist side by side with ASUU in Nigerian universities.”
He urged the newly registered academic unions not to interfere with the activities of the university management and the governing council.
Mr Ngige accused ASUU of interfering with the rights of employers by insisting that the University Transparency and Accountability Solutions (UTAS) be adopted as a payment platform for its members.
