The prison break at the Koton Karfe Custodial Centre in Kogi State is to be probed.
Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who revealed this in a statement by his spokesperson, Babatunde Alao on Monday, said the incident was unfortunate.
Ojo said all the fleeing inmates would be captured leveraging the service’s robust biometrics and already deployed technology solutions.
Alao, Tunji-Ojo also ordered the Acting Comptroller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Sylvester Ndidi, to evaluate the facility in Kogi and begin a comprehensive audit to unravel the events that led to the incident.
“We are on top of the situation. Our men are on ground in Kogi, and I have ordered a comprehensive audit of the situation,” the minister said.
Twelve inmates escaped from the custodial Centre in the early hours of Monday.
In a statement, the Kogi State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Kingsley Fanwo, said the inmates escaped through the tower.
He said the state government would facilitate the circumstances leading to the prisoners’ escape.
