After 15 years, there are indications that Nigeria will conduct a population and housing census in 2022 as the federal government has appropriated the sum of N178.09 billion for it in the 2022 budget.
The last time a population and housing census was conducted in the country was in 2006.
Minister of finance, budget and national planning, Zainab Ahmed, disclosed this while giving a breakdown of the proposed 2022 appropriation presented to the National Assembly by President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday.
In December 2020, the National Population Commission (NPC) disclosed that an estimated 206 million people live in Nigeria, an increase of eight million people in two years, against the 198 million earlier estimated in 2018.
Apart from the N178 billion, a separate budget of N191,549,309,345 was earmarked for the population commission, out of which N8,265,544,131 is for personnel (Salaries), N615,073,951 for overhead and N182,668691,263 for capital expenditure.
