The father of the prime suspect in the gruesome killing of seven members of a family in Kano has publicly renounced his son, urging authorities to impose the stiffest possible punishment without delay.
Malam Auwal, father of Umar Auwal, who is currently in police custody, said his son does not deserve mercy for the alleged murder of his younger sister, Fatima Abubakar, and her six children in the Dorayi Chiranchi area of the Kano metropolis.
The tragic incident, which occurred on Saturday in broad daylight, claimed the lives of Fatima, 35, and her children — Maimuna (17), Aisha (16), Bashir (13), Abubakar (10), Faruk (7) and Abdussalam (one year and six months).
Speaking during a radio interview monitored in Kano, Malam Auwal distanced himself entirely from the suspect, describing him as a danger to society and insisting that justice must be swift and uncompromising.
“What he did to my younger sister and her innocent children is unforgivable. I have disowned him completely. Someone who can commit such an act does not deserve to live among humans,” he said.
However, police authorities have confirmed that Umar allegedly confessed to the Dorayi killings and also admitted involvement in a separate violent incident in Tudun Yola, where two women were reportedly murdered and a house set on fire. The suspect’s father further alleged that Umar had been linked to a previous family tragedy years ago, stressing that his continued existence posed a threat to public safety.
He commended the Kano State Police Command for acting swiftly, adding that neither he nor the suspect’s mother would attend court proceedings related to the case. ” There is no reason for us to appear in the court proceeding, and as such, we will not. He has to pay for his deeds,” said the father
