The corpse of a farmer simply known as Umar, who drowned when a canoe capsized in Kaduna was yet to be recovered.
Kaduna North Local Government Chairman, Muktar Baloni, disclosed this, saying the search for the farmer’s body will continue.
The canoe capsized on Sunday at 8:30am in River Kaduna where the farmer was drowned and eight other people survived.
It was learnt that the late Umar paddled the canoe to help the people stranded on the other side of the river but the canoe capsized.
A resident who knew the late farmer Murtala Kabala said Umar was popular in the community and owed a farm close to the river
“It is worrisome because Umar knew how to swim and had been at the riverside for years farming. This is why we were surprised that he got drowned in the same river while trying to rescue people who got stranded on the other side of the river. May Allah forgive his shortcomings,” he said.
Baloni has lamented that part of the local government area got flooded, adding that the council was compiling details of affected houses to assist the victims.
