A 25-year-old farmer, Mohammad Mohammad, has been arrested for allegedly poisoning nine wells in Kasesa village near Damaturu.
Spokesperson of the state Police Command, Dungus Abdulkarim, who disclosed this on Thursday in Damaturu, Yobe State capital, said Mohammed poured insecticide into nine wells which are sources of water to residents and animal herds in the area.
“When we collected the well water as a sample and conducted laboratory analysis, we discovered that they were contaminated with fecal coliforms, which can cause cholera, typhoid and other water borne diseases,” he said.
“Therefore, we identified and arrested the suspect today. He will be charged to court soon,” he said.
Abdulkarim said the suspect has confessed to committing the offence, but said his intention was to deter herders from invading his farm.
He said the command was making efforts to arrest the herders and charge them to court for trespassing.
