A nonagenarian broke down in tears on Saturday after officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) stopped her from voting in the Anambra State governorship election.
The 96-year-old woman could not vote her at Polling Unit 19, Registration Area Centre 8, Agulu II, in Anaocha Local Government Area of the state.
The senior citizen, clutching an umbrella, came to the polling unit around 10:33 a.m. and sat on one of the chairs provided for accreditation.
She caught the attention of other was voters due to her frail frame.
However, as she made to perform her civic responsibility, INEC officials who inspected her card, said she couldn’t use the card to vote because her card was from 1993 and therefore invalid for the election.
They said only Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) issued after the last registration were acceptable for accreditation and voting.
The explanation made the nonagenarian emotional and she started crying.
Her situation attracted the sympathy of other voters and officials who tried to comfort her.
