The former chairmen of 21 out of the 23 local government areas in Rivers State have thrown their weight behind the continuous blockade of secretariats of the local governments by the police.
The former council chairmen loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, staged a solidarity protest to drive home their support at their various council areas on Monday.
This is in spite a subsisting ban by the police on all manner of protests in the state
In Buguma, the council headquarters of the Asari-Toru LGA, former Chairman Onengiyeofori George, alongside his supporters, marched through the streets of the town as they gyrated to songs in solidarity with Wike.
The protesters bore placards with inscriptions asking the police to continue occupying the council headquarters. Some of the inscriptions read, “Sim Fubara Can’t Continue to Act As He Likes” and “There’s No Vacancy in Asari-Toru Council”.
At Asari-Toru LGA, the protest almost turned violent when some men believed to be operatives of Asari Dokubo’s private military company, Amama soldiers, tried to attack the protesters but were restrained by police.
The protesters later presented a protest letter to the police.
There was a similar protest in Abonnema, headquarters of Akuku-Toru LGA council, where some persons staged a protest, backing the continued barricade of the council premises by the police.
