A newly wedded groom was killed and several others kidnapped as bandits on Saturday attacked Jere town in Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
Among those taken hostage were the pregnant wife of the slain groom and four family members of a former Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation in the state, Abdulrahman Ibrahim Jere.
The bandits reportedly came on over 50 motorbikes, attacking houses.
A resident said, “We could not sleep. The bandits came in large numbers on motorcycles, each carrying a sophisticated weapon and went from house to house.
“But they headed for the former Commissioner’s residence where they abducted the wife, a baby (girl), sister and his sister-in-law,” he said.
He said upon arrival at the newlywed couple’s house, the groom resisted the move to abduct his wife, and the bandits shot him dead.
Members of the community, especially the youth got provoked that despite the presence of security agents, such attack could still take place. They wondered how the hoodlums could operate for three hours uninterrupted, the resident said.
He said security operatives surfaced hours after the bandits had left, claiming they had killed two of the bandits.
