The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has disclosed that it’s digital currency, eNaira, successfully completed N46.3 million worth of transactions in less than two weeks of launch. A senior official of the apex bank disclosed this to the Financial Times.
eNaira, Africa’s first digital currency, Africa’s first digital currency, made its debut on the October 25, 2021 with over 200,000 downloads in 24 hours.
The senior official said the currency’s first week and a half, was a “resounding success,” with roughly 400,000 new wallets registered in dozens of nations and clients making 12,500 transactions worth N46.3 million ($113,000). This success is in spite customers complaints about a complicated sign-up process and the downtime suffered by the app after it’s removal from Google Playstore.
