The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has said its governor, Godwin Emefiele, will not be appearing before the House of Representatives on Thursday (tomorrow) as he is ill.
The bank said Emefiele will be represented by the Deputy Governor, Financial System Stability, CBN, Aisha Ahmad.
In a letter to the House, signed by the Deputy Governor, Corporate Services, Edward Adamu, the CBN attributed Emefiele’s inability to be physically present to ill health.
The letter was read by Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila.
Emefiele was billed to appear before the House on Tuesday after earlier failing to appear last Thursday.
The House had summoned the CBN governor to explain the bank’s recent cash withdrawal policy.
Last Thursday, Adamu, in a communication to the House, told the lawmakers that Emefiele was in President Muhammadu Buhari’s entourage to the United States and unable to honour the invitation.
However, the CBN wrote the House again, on Tuesday, to say Emefiele was still on official assignment.
After Gbajabiamila read out the letter to members at plenary on Wednesday, the lawmakers resolved to accept Emefiele’s representation.
